With more people considering turning their yards, patios and window sills into vegetable gardens, Village Commons in Little Rock is helping them get a head start with its home gardening luncheon and gardening series from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Gerald’s House, 12th and Oak streets in Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday, October 17 and 24 as well as November 7 and 14, 2009.

Gerald’s House, a newly refurbished, early-1900s house serving the community as a resource center and gathering place, has a community garden in which the gardening series and luncheons will take place.  The cost per workshop is $10, and the buffet-style meal, which will be prepared by local chefs, is $12.  For both the workshop and luncheon, the cost is $20.

The series includes:

The Benefits of Home Gardening, October 17
Lifelong gardener and community development professional Freeman McKindra, Sr., of Little Rock will kick off the fall gardening workshop series by sharing his wisdom about the rewards of gardening for families and communities as well as tips for success.  Melanie Lacy will prepare a vegan lunch.

Tomato Success and Heirlooms for Central Arkansas, October 24
A longtime organic grower and owner of a bedding plant business, Herb Culver with Bean Mt. Farms in Newton County, Ark., will share from his wealth of knowledge about the basics of successful organic growing of this sometimes difficult plant, including preventive measures to reduce loss from disease. He will recommend heirloom varieties for Central Arkansas and discuss seed saving techniques for the home gardener.  Polly Castaneda will prepare a lunch from Guatemalan recipes.

Gardening Basics and Growing in Extreme Weather, November 7
A small-scale organic grower and home gardener, Nancy Dockter with Great Day Natural Produce in Sherwood will share essential gardening basics for keeping plants thriving, especially during extremes of heat and cold. She will demonstrate how easy it is to set up a low tunnel over a home vegetable bed to provide protection against freezing temperatures, rain or summer heat.

Growing Great Potatoes, November 14
Organic growers with many decades of experience, Rusty and Sue Nuffer with Armstead Mtn. Farm in Pope County, Ark., are well-known among local food lovers for their top-quality vegetables. The Nuffers’ flavorful potatoes are always a sell-out, and this workshop is a rare opportunity to learn the basics of growing potatoes as well as varieties the Nuffers recommend for this region.  Tina Harris will prepare a down-home Southern lunch for participants.

To register, contact Kerri Michael Sernel at 501-765-5853 or kmsernel@comcast.net.  For more information about the workshops, contact Nancy Dockter at 501-749-2062 or new19doc@msn.com.
